CBB Providence at Notre Dame

February 15, 2007
College Basketball - Providence at Notre Dame (-8, 156) 7:00 PM EST

All six of the Fighting Irish losses have come on the road this season including the last two at South Florida and at DePaul. Three of the final five games on the schedule are at the Joyce Activity Center where Notre Dame is an unblemished 15-0.

After flirting with being at the top of the Big East standings, all the road defeats have the Irish in the middle of the pack. What Coach Brey is looking for is NCAA Tournament bid and finishing in the top four of the conference to receive a bye in the first round of the proceedings at Madison Square Garden in early March.

Notre Dame has had a week to think about how they should have won at DePaul, when falling 67-66. They should be ready to take on an opponent that has big time issues on the road in Providence.

The Friars much like the Irish find winning on the road a real chore. They are 1-5 with three covers this season. Dating back to last year Providence is 2-11 ATS after playing a game as a road underdog over the last two seasons.

The Friars are proficient offensive club averaging 77.3 points per game on 49.3 percent shooting. They are led by three strong scorers Sharaud Curry (17.2), Herbert Hill (17.0) and Weyinmi Efejuku (13.7). Collectively they formulate a nice inside-outside combination that is tough to defend. Where coach Tim Welch team runs into problems is defense, when they allow 77 PPG as the more then generous guest.

Even as they try Notre Dame still lacks the patience to score more inside, despite averaging 81.8 PPG. Too often they settle for long three point attempts in clutch situations and this is a big reason why they lose road games. The Irish are an 8.5-point favorite at sportsbook.com and are 5-4-1 ATS at home. The situation for Notre Dame is weak since they are just 9-19 ATS in home games off a loss against a conference rival.

Providence numbers are not reassuring; with 0-6 ATS record versus good offensive teams scoring 77+ points a game after 15 or more contests.
