CFB Boston College at Notre Dame

October 13, 2007

College Football Preview - (4) Boston College Eagles at Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3:30 PM ET

Boston College is currently a 13.5-point road favorite with the game total at 46.5 at sportsbook.com.

Off its first win of '07, Notre Dame hopes to make it two-in-a-row and put a crimp into Boston College's national championship hopes. The Eagles have ascended into the nation's Top 5 with a solid start.

Matt Ryan, QB of Boston CollegeThe Eagles are just one of 11 teams that have yet to lose, and they start a stretch of four road games in their next five with this one in South Bend. BC was 0-5 ATS as road chalk last season.

The Irish come off a stunning outright 20-6 upset at UCLA in which they were a 22-point underdog.

With back-to-back games against B.C. and USC, they have a chance to do serious damage to BCS hopes.

In this series, the underdog is on a 9-3 ATS run, with BC going 4-0 straight up and 3-1 ATS in the last 4.

Boston College has put forth minimal effort in winning last three non-conference games against teams they should whip handily.

Surprisingly, after this game they have one more on the road before diving back into ACC action. QB Matt Ryan continues to have a stellar senior season in a wide open offense with Jeff Jagodzinski as coach.

Ryan has proven in his career to be a big game performer. Though today's opposing team does not warrant the usual acclaim, these are always important games to Boston College.

If adversity builds character, every football player on the Notre Dame team will be upstanding citizens in life after this disaster. In watching Notre Dame, you can't help but notice all the little things that make them unsuccessful. Receivers running routes for four yards when five are needed to move the chains.

Offensive linemen making initial thrust, but not finishing blocks that could lead to bigger gains. The entire defensive front seven is continually out of position on all sorts of plays, leaving the Irish vulnerable to longer gains by the opposition then what should have been.

It might not be Weis's fault directly; however he hired the assistants that play a huge role in this team's failures even if the talent is too young and sub-par.

Key Trend - Notre Dame is 1-6-1 ATS off two or more road games.

With a pall hanging over the South Bend campus like L.A. smog, only a supreme effort could lift the spirits of navy and gold clad students and alumni.

The Irish are 2-5 ATS playing B.C. since 1998 and have USC coming to town next week. An all-out assault on the Eagles might be needed to break this never before seen streak.
