College Football Preview - West Virginia Mountaineers at Maryland Terps 7:30 PM EST
West Virginia is currently a -16.5 favorite with a total of 62 at sportsbook.com.
A pair of 2-0 rivals meet in the Thursday night feature on ESPN. This has been a peculiar rivalry over the years, as often the Mountaineers have had better teams and still lost outright as favorites.
In fact, West Virginia is 5-10-1 ATS against Maryland the last 16 seasons. However, WVU has won the last three, going 2-1 ATS. Going in Maryland’s favor is a 10-3 SU & 9-4 ATS series mark for the home team.
This has the making of intriguing encounter with Mountaineers 11-2-1 ATS playing on weekdays. It will be the first true test of the season for both clubs, since neither has played a highly touted foe yet.
As expected, highly ranked West Virginia has gotten off to fast start with running back Steve Slaton and quarterback Pat White leading fast paced attack.
The spread offense continues to baffle inferior opponents with its speed and White’s nearly flawless execution.
On defense coach Rich Rodriquez team has had a few rough spots early, however that is to be expected since they have introduced new wrinkles like two-deep safety coverage, more man-to-man coverage and a formation with only two down lineman and one end.
This will be Maryland’s third game in 12 days, after playing a pair of crème puffs. This is a different Terps team then in recent years with lots of experience on both sides of the ball.
Sophomore quarterback Jordan Steffy job is to be an efficient signal caller and manage the game plan Ralph Friedgen has put together.
One caveat in this encounter is if West Virginia bolts to a lead that forces the hand of Maryland, Steffy has to be a playmaker instead of a game manager. Friedgen’s Terrapins are 4-3 ATS as home underdogs.
