MLB Betting Preview - Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners (-132, 9) 10:00 PM EST
Sometimes you can't keep from losing no matter what you do. You can be the Boston Red Sox, with the best record in major league baseball, and for some reason you make the annual sojourn up to the Northwest area of the United States and suddenly turn into the Seattle Pilots.
Only the Detroit Tigers have a higher winning percentage and units won in major league baseball in road games played.
Then comes Boston, yet coffee town, with its Nirvana and Soundgarden music blaring from every street corner (slight exaggeration) brings out the worst in the Red Sox. Boston has now lost eight of 10 at Safeco Field and will try to change their luck against the up and down Mariners.
Losing the first game of the series has been a detriment to them since they are just 4-4 after dropping the first contest trying to win a three game series.
While it's impossible to pinpoint why Terry Francona's club plays so poorly in Seattle, he will try a different tack going with Kason Gabbard as his starting pitcher.
The 25-year old left-hander has made a single start this season and actually made his major league starting debut against the Mariners last July 22 in a 5-2 loss.
Gabbard is most effective when doesn't walk many batters and has the earth shaking from the constant beat of ground ball outs.
Seattle is much like those steep roller coaster people enjoy in the summertime. You go up, you go down, you go up, and well that is this Mariners squad. Seattle has now won five of six after losing six straight, which is on the heels of winning five in a row.
Manager Mike Hargrove's team has many attributes that make them an above average team. They have a line-up that can score runs, ranked seventh in baseball and keep the ball in play, being next to last in strikeouts.
The Mariners can be most efficient with 21-12 record against the money line after four straight games where they stranded seven or less runners on base. Because of hot and cold nature like Starbucks coffee, they are 16-6 after having won three of their last four games this season.
Seattle is a -132 home favorite against Boston, as noted as sportsbook.com. Felix Hernandez again flashed the early season brilliance in his last start, going eight shutout innings, raising his record to 4-4 and lowering his
earned run average to an even four.
Hernandez has had two domineering starts against Boston, including a complete game one hit shutout on April 11 this season. The M's are 14-6 vs. LH starters, gathering +10.4 units of profit.
Boston has been quite focused off a loss with a 19-7 record this season. The Red Sox have been especially stingy on the road scoring and allowing runs, playing Under 27 of 39 games.
This is especially true with 20-5 UNDER mark in road games after allowing nine runs or more over the last three seasons.
