 Jeremy Bonderman will be looking for his 10th win of the season and favored to do so.
Going into Friday’s series opener, the Red Sox-Tigers matchup was a glimpse of what the playoffs would look like had it been October.
Boston of course, owns the entire league’s top mark, while Detroit is comfortably positioned currently in the American League’s wildcard position.
This is also the second and final time that the teams will be meeting in the regular season, so it could be the last opportunity to see their future postseason opponent close up. Both clubs will be looking to send that pre-playoff message ovet the next two days.
Boston took three out of the four games between the clubs at home back in May. Today’s pitcher for the Tigers, Jeremy Bonderman, did not work in that series, nor did the Sox hurler, Kason Gabbard.
The rookie left-hander Gabbard is 2-0 and the Sox are 2-1 in his three starts thus far, but he is working on a 1.86 WHIP. That isn’t good news facing the league’s top run producing team. For Bonderman, he is in the midst of a great season, boasting a 9-1 record personally.
Detroit is just 10-5 in his starts though so he is not getting full support from his bullpen. His 1.184 WHIP ranks among the best in the American League.
This game and the entire series for that matter, is a battle of strengths. Boston has been a tough foe when hitting the road, going 25-17 for +7.1 units before Friday’s affair.
They were also 9-4 against the Central Division and 40-20 against right-handed pitching. For the Tigers, their record vs. southpaws is 17-7 for +9.7 units, so the young Gabbard figures to have his hands full.
Detroit was also an impressive 38-22 for +6.5 units as a favorite before last night.
