MLB Yankees at Red Sox

June 01, 2007

MLB Baseball -  N.Y. Yankees at Boston Red Sox 7:00 PM ET

New York is -112 favorites with a total of 10.5 at

The number three and four top offenses in major league baseball will butt heads with New York traveling up to Boston for yet another installment in baseball's best rivalry.

Derek jeter of the YankeesThe Yankees arrive having lost 12 of 18 and are hands down the worst bet in baseball at -22.6 units. With New York in the AL East cellar with Tampa Bay, Boston has been on cruise control in first place winning seven of last 10 contests.

Boston has taken six of first nine games between these bitter rivals in 2007. The Red Sox are the opposite of New York being the best bet in baseball at +17.4 units.

Playing the Over in Fenway Park when these two clubs collide is like Penn and Teller, it just goes together with the number going Over 16 of 22 times. (72.7%)

Unfortunately a topic of conversation will be Alex Rodriguez, who is picking up nicknames in bunches these days, A-Rod, Stray-Rod and Bush-Rod. With apologies to former Yogi Berra, it's still early, but it's getting late for New York.

Why Yankees win
With just about a third of the season completed, New York does not have to panic, but they must start playing better baseball. There is no better place to make a statement then in Beantown for the Bronx Bombers.

The players understand the problem and are looking to correct it. "When we pitch well, we haven't really swung the bats well," said the Yankees Rodriguez. "It's definitely been a frustrating run, the last two weeks or so. All you say is one day at a time. It's got to start with one win." The guys with the NY on the cap have to take pride in the past and start playing that way.

New York is 51-31 against the money line in road games when playing against a top-level team (Win Pct. > 62%) since 1997.

Chein-Ming Wang draws the opening assignment and is 3-4 on the season. In his last three starts he is turning season around with 2-1 mark and 2.53 ERA. Wang has yet to surrender a home run to RH batter this season. New York is 6-1 in Wang's last seven road starts.

Why Red Sox win
For starters first baseman Kevin Youkilis is hotter then Selma Hayek in a swimsuit with his career best 22-game hitting streak, which has him batting .429 (42-for-98) during the streak. He has raised his batting average an unfathomable 74 points to .354 and immensely contributed to Boston being 27-12 against the ML against right-handed starters this season.

The Red Sox lost there last game and that is bad news for this division rival, since they are 13-2 after a defeat this year. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will try to keep the Yanks line-up off kilter with his fluttering tosses.

Wakefield started the season almost unhittable, yet received little run support. He has been battered about of late allowing 15 runs in 19 innings; however overall has been effective with 3.36 ERA to go with 5-5 record.

Wakefield is 0-2 this season against New York and 9-15 lifetime, but he hasn't faced the Yankees on a Friday this year, as they are 0-8 to start a weekend.

Top Totals Trends
New York is 14-4 UNDER as a road favorite of -110 or higher this season. Boston and pitcher Wakefield are 10-1 UNDER as an underdog of +100 or higher over the last two seasons.
It is hard to fathom a road team in last place would be favored against a home team in first place. Pitching more than anything will determine the outcome. Both starting pitchers have ERA's approaching five runs against the other team, meaning the bullpens are expected to play a large role in the outcome.

New York's pen has a 4.51 ERA, with 6-9 record and a league worst four saves. Boston on the other hand is 18-8 at Fenway, with relievers contributing to 3.07 ERA, 7-1 record and a save conversion rate of better than 90 percent.

Unless the Yankees jump off to 5 or 6 run lead early, the Red Sox as underdogs are the play.
