Oklahoma State at Kansas Preview

January 10, 2007

College Basketball - Oklahoma State Cowboys (+8, 140) at Kansas Jayhawks 9:00 PM EST

A pair of Big 12 powerhouses collide in tonight's best contest on the college card. Oklahoma State who has lost just a single game, heads over to Kansas to take on the ever improving Jayhawks, who have recorded seven straight wins.

This will not be a stationary walk the ball up the floor match-up. Both teams prefer to force the action. Oklahoma State averages 84.9 points a game, which is 10th in the country. On the road the Cowboys total drop, but still is a respectable 76.3 PPG. Kansas can motor all 94 feet, putting up 77 points a contest, led by Brandon Rush. Both teams are excellent shooting teams, with Okie State at 51.1% and Kansas 48.5%.

Oklahoma comes in off a tougher then expected contest against Baylor in which they won 81-77 as 12.5-point favorites. Possibly the best player you never heard of is Mario Boggans, who is scoring 21.9 PPG and nabbing almost 8 rebounds a game. His running mate is at guard in JamesOn Curry who has boundless range and makes every big shot in the context of a game. Combined, these two account for nearly half the Cowboys offense.

Kansas is a young ultra-talented team that is prone to lacking the mental toughness that has marked this program for years and led to several early exits in the NCAA Tournament. This is shown in home loss to Oral Roberts in November and careless road loss at DePaul, blowing a lead late in the game. Coach Bill Self will be interested how his team responds, since they are in the middle of four games eight days, all against teams with solid records. They passed the first test at South Carolina shooting 58.5%. After tonight a trip to Iowa State and home against big rival Missouri will test this team's mettle.

No matter what, any team coached by Bill Self will play defense. Kansas is 7th in the nation in field goal defense at 37.1%. This style of play along the homecourt has the Jayhawks favored by 8-points in Lawrence at Kansas is 13-3-1 ATS when favored by 6.5 to 12 points at Allen Fieldhouse. Coach Self's teams are 18-6 ATS in home games versus good defensive teams - shooting pct. defense of 42% after 15 or more games.

Oklahoma State off against the spread loss is an exceptional bounce back team and is a perfect 7-0 ATS after incurring such a set back.
