Doubles Jeopardy: ATP Announces Plan To Shorten Doubles Sets

By Tennis Week

The ATP announced a new scoring system that will shrink doubles sets. Doubles matches at many fall tournaments will feature no-ad games and sets played to five games rather than six, with a tie-break at 4-4, the ATP announced today.

Possible set scores will be 5-0, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3 and 5-4. While the ATP is selling the new scoring system as "enhancements to doubles designed to appeal to fans and better showcase the tandem game", some players aren't buying it.

Todd Woodbridge, who owns the Open Era record for most doubles titles with 83, suggested the ATP's decision devalues doubles by adopting a scoring system that is not approved by the International Tennis Federation.

"I'm very disappointed with our council, so much so that I think they all should resign because they've gone ahead and made changes without even asking what the rest of the tennis world thinks," Woodbridge said. "They've made a scoring system that doesn't even exist. It's not an approved system by the International Tennis Federation. They've gone and made a decision against what the players also wish. Even the top singles players are scratching their head at this decision. It's disappointing. Perhaps with that in mind I've also timed it pretty well."
