October 7, Hockey Plays YTD: 1-0-0, +$20.00
Friday: Pittsburgh Penguins -140 over Carolina Hurricanes (NHL)
$28 to win $20
Penguins off a lashing 5-1 to the Devils but didn't play bad. The defense for the pens was a little suspect and allowed a few rebound goals but it's nothing the bulky D can't take care of. Carolina have problems at goaltending and this appeals here. Gerber injured himself and they'll be starting youngster Cam Ward tonight against the Penguins top guns. I feel this is a good chance for Pittsburgh to finally show their offensive flair and Sidney Crosby to excel. The Caines have an average defense at best and their goaltending isn't good right now. The Pens Thibault will be more solid tonight I expect, he has held high SV% numbers before. Bounce back game here. Calgary Flames -145 over Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL)
$29 to win $20
Blue Jackets have a nice young team and some decent goaltending with Denis but without Nash their lineup does look bleek. Take a high 40 goal scorer from a roster that doesn't excel on offense and you have problems. Take that anemic offense and put them up against a world class goaltender in Kiprusoff and you can see where my line of thinking goes here. Columbus wasn't good at home when they last played and the defending runner ups only got solid in the offseason with the likes of Amonte and Hamrlik. Calgary should play well in this spot.
