Saturday's Tip Sheet - (Author unknown)

1-27-07

The gambling gets started early Saturday with a pair of games going at noon on ESPN and ESPN2. Michigan will go into Bloomington to try and knock off Indiana as a seven-point underdog.

Xavier will play host to Dayton in the other noon tip as a 14-point ‘chalk.’

The action really heats up at 1:00 when a slumping Arizona squad plays host to North Carolina, which has rolled to three double-digit victories since suffering its only ACC loss at Virginia Tech.

Other notable television games include Oklahoma at Texas A&M, Villanova at Notre Dame, Syracuse and Louisville and then the nightcap game: Michigan State at Ohio St. at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

Let’s take a look at a few of these games before going through some Bonus Nuggets.

**North Carolina at Arizona**

--Arizona (14-5 straight up, 8-9 against the spread) is off a 71-47 win over an abysmal Arizona State team, but the Wildcats lost four of their previous five games. That slump would quickly be forgotten with a win over the Tar Heels.

--Most spots are listing North Carolina (18-2 SU, 12-4 ATS) as a 2 ½-point favorite. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened the total at 163.

--Arizona has been an underdog just once this year. The Wildcats hooked up their backers by taking the money as six-point underdogs in a 73-69 loss at UCLA.

**Villanova at Notre Dame**

--Notre Dame (16-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) has lost two of its last three games to add significance to this crucial Big East home game.

--Since losing at Syracuse, Villanova (14-5 SU, 10-6 ATS) has won three straight games both SU and ATS.

--Most spots have installed the Irish as three-point favorites.

--The ‘over’ is 4-0-1 in the last five head-to-head meetings between these Big East rivals. Notre Dame has covered the spread in four of those five games.

--The ‘under’ is 6-2 in Villanova’s eight road games.

--Las Vegas Sports Consultants oddsmaker John Hurst thinks Jay Wright might be doing his best coaching job to date with this team. Hurst told VI, “Wright is a terrific coach. He had tons of success with the four-guard system last year, but even after losing three of those guys, he has that team playing well. Nobody expected Villanova to beat Texas without Curtis Sumpter.” (Sumpter was out against Texas but is “probable” at Notre Dame.)

--ESPN will have the telecast at 4:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Florida at Auburn**

--Most sports books are listing the nation’s top-ranked team as an 11-point road favorite for Saturday’s 5:00 p.m. Eastern tip-off.

--Florida (18-2 SU, 6-6 ATS) is off a non-covering 70-67 win at Mississippi State on Wednesday. The Gators are the only unbeaten team in SEC play. They have won 11 in a row SU, but that stretch has only netted a 4-4 spread mark.

--The Gators are 5-3-1 ATS as double-digit favorites.

--Auburn (13-8 SU, 8-8 ATS) is 3-1 ATS as a home underdog this year, including back-to-back outright wins over Tennessee and Alabama.

--We’re only six games into conference play and every other team in the SEC West is below .500. Nevertheless, Auburn is – at least for now – sitting in first place in its division all alone. That’s a first in Jeff Lebo’s three-year tenure that’s been a trying experience similar to that of Dennis Felton’s at Georgia. (Both coaches inherited probation from Cliff Ellis and Jim Harrick, respectively.)

**Michigan State at Ohio State**

--Ohio State (17-3 SU, 11-7 ATS) is an 8 ½-point ‘chalk’ at most books. The Buckeyes are off a 59-50 win at Northwestern as 10-point favorites.

--Michigan State (17-4 SU, 8-8 ATS) has won four in a row both SU and ATS since a blowout loss at Indiana.

--The Spartans have lost only one game by more than seven points this year. That was the aforementioned defeat from the Hoosiers by a 73-51 count.

--Tom Izzo’s team has seen the ‘under’ produce an 11-5 overall record and a 4-1 mark in its road games. The ‘under’ is 5-1 in the Spartans’ last six outings.

--Michigan St. is 0-2 both SU and ATS as an underdog this year.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--The ‘under’ is 10-2 in North Carolina’s last 12 games with a total.

--Speaking of the Tar Heels, they are tied with Davidson for the best ATS record in the country (12-4). Four schools have 12-5 records: Ole Miss, Stanford, Weber St. and California.

--Former VI cohort Jim Lamar is the General Manager of the Osceola, the magazine that covers Florida State sports. When Lamar appeared on Thursday’s edition of the Power Hours, he said, “Any number less than 20 should merit a play on FSU. Wake is just terrible this year.” As of early this morning, the Seminoles were just 13 ½-point favorites.

--Air Force is a short ‘dog today at BYU. The Falcons are 3-1 ATS in four previous games as underdogs.

--Texas Tech is a 2 1/2-point underdog today at Missouri. The Red Raiders are off upset wins at home over Texas A&M and Kansas last week. Bobby Knight's team has covered the spread in each of its last four games as an underdog.

--SEC West teams have combined for an 0-16 record on the road in conference games.
