Default Week 2

Virginia Tech -12 @ North Carolina

Beamer's boys have history of coming out of the gates quick, 14-3 last 5 yrs in Sept, and 11-12 ATS in road openers. Last week's win over Northeastern certainly nothing to pay homage too but Glennon very efficient and definitely gives the impression of bigger and better times ahead. NC on the other hand has the aroma of a team heading south in a hurry. Rutger's Ray Rice ran wild all game long and you should expect a repeat of that with Tech's talented Sophmore Brandon Ore. VT in a walk 35-17.

Illinois @ Rutgers -10.5

Undoubtedly some, maybe many, reaching for the antacids just thinking about having to lay 10+ on Scarlet Knights but I'm sold. Greg Schiano's got this team on track, and while I am not predicting it, I won't be surprised if they get a sniff of top 25 sometime this year. They're confidence is soaring off last year's bowl berth and it showed in win over North Carolina last week. Very efficient performance, little sign of panic when Heels tried to mount late comeback, instead they simply shut the door. Expect to see another big game from Ray Rice in light of Illinois' less than inspiring 3.2 per rush performance against E Illinois. If Illinois can't do better than that, and no reason to suggest they can, Scarlet Knights have a great day romping home 35-17.

Kent St @ Army -4

Yah I know Black Knights haven't had a winning season since '96 and they looked dreadful last week against Arkansas St, but hell's bells Kent St looked comatose. 322 yds on the ground for Minnesota says about all you need to know. Expect Army to go to ground and ground ground and then some more ground as they get back to even exploiting brutal Golden Flashes D. Army 35-14.

Wyoming +9.5 @ Virginia

2 questions: is Wyoming as good as last week's dismantling of Utah St suggests, and did Cavaliers replace l with d to become the Cadavers. Answer to both lies somewhere between not quite and maybe. To be honest I have to admit I was surprised by how easily Wyoming dispatched Utah St. Figured them for the win but definitely not 38-7. For the doubters who are sure to point out that it was 17-7 entering 4th and 3 big plays turned it into a rout I will acknowledge I agree to a point but Cowboys win for me was impressive for the D they played. No one's going to mistake Groh's Cavs for the next coming of oh i dont know...say Duke...but they're definitely not worthy of being 9.5 favs. Cowboys capable of a SU steal in this one but I'll gladly take points and settle for cover. Virginia 24-21

Tulsa +4 @ BYU

Last week I was with Cougars for cover against Arizona. Not because of any great expectations of a BYU revival but because Zona is Zona. This week it's a different tune with Golden Hurricanes. Tulsa has qualified for bowls 2 of last 3 years and is flying high off their conference title last year. Week one dismantling of Stephen Austin was a given but if you look inside the game and numbers u find lots to chew on. Paul Smith had a very solid game at QB while Tarion Adams and Courtney Tennial each had a TD rushing and receiving. BYU on the other hand while playing to expectations in keeping it close showed little in the way of noticable improvement from '05. Beck threw for 289 yds but they only managed one TD. Breakdown, breakdown, breakdowns. If they can tidy things up this one has potential for a wild ride but Tulsa wins 35-31.

Minnesota @ California -7.5

Never as bad as they look. A motto I first adopted in my college days when it was getting near to closing time and it still holds true to this day when looking at Top 25 teams who lay a stinker early in the year. No two ways around the fact that Cal had its lunch handed to them last week. They'll be looking to bounce back and being at home will only add to that hunger. Gophers provide the perfect remedy. Don't want to hear anything about Minn being fast starters, or 10-1 last 3 yrs in opening 4 games against the line, because Minnesota's usual modus operandi doesn't apply to this game. Yes they start fast, but last weeks destruction of Kent St only serves to highlight what has driven me crazy about this program for a good many years. Any big school can jump out 4-0 consistently if all you're playing in Sept are creampuffs. Cali is the first real test in some time that I can recall Minn taking on this early in the season. Caps off to them for doing so but they fall....California 28-17

Georgia @ South Carolina +3

Call it hunch. Most peeps on Georgia but this one's usually close and SC will be looking for revenge of last year's nail biting 17-15 loss. Home field advantage and Spurrier's magic pull off a win 20-17.

good hunting this weekend amigos

V Tech 35-10. As i expected NC no remedy for run...surrendering 3.9 per rush attempt. Close for a half but Hokies just too much for Heels.
