Should You Vary The Size of Your Wagers?

The Do's and Don'ts of the above statement will have many readers agreeing, or disagreeing, about whether a gambler should vary his or her wagers on one game vs. another. In other words, betting 2-units on one game and 3-units on another, etc. Is there a golden rule? Is there a set pattern of "when to and when not too"?

When the variance of a specific bet would apply to NFL football, I say yes. Here are some scenarios.

#1. Betting $100.00 on every game to net $91.00. If you were laying $1.20 juice then your bet would be $100.00 to win $80.00. At - $1.30 your net would be $70.00 and so forth.

#2. Some will keep the units the same and wager $110.00 to win one hundred or lay $1.20 to win a hundred and so forth.

#3. The following scenario would be foolhardy at best. Betting four games at $110.00 to win one hundred and betting one game at $440.00 to win $400.00. In that situation you could go 4-1 ATS and lose $40.00. Imagine winning the four wagers at $100.00 each and losing the top play for a minus $440.00.

Here is how I approach these staggered wagers. For starters I play a lot of games. I'll play X amount of games at 2-units, X amount of plays at 3-units and the occasional 4, 4½ or 5-unit bet. This past Sunday I played 12 selections. I had 8 plays at 2-units each and four selections at 3-units each. The 3-unit plays went 3-1 ATS for a + $570.00. The 2-unit selections went 5-3 ATS for a + $340.00. The net profit was + $910.00. Had I played all the games for 2-units each I would have made a profit of + $720.00. I increased my margin of profit by an additional $190.00 by adding the four games at 3-units each. This past weekend I didn't have any best bets. A best bet for my sports service would be a game rated at 4-units or higher. The reason I backed off was due to the beating I took the week before. I didn't want clients to "load up" on a 4-unit play and try to recoup all their loses in one week. If you are going to vary your wagers make sure you have done your homework. The up side is a higher rate of return and the down side is having a winning record such as 6-4 ATS, but losing money in the process by losing the larger wagers while winning the smaller bets.

I have personally made 22 best bets this NFL season and went 17-5 ATS. Two of those wins were by a half-point. It always pays to shop around. If you can isolate a strong play than varying your bet size does make sense.
