Saturday's Games
Televised Games
-- Kansas State is 0-6 vs spread in non-league games since 2003; they're 7-5 as road favorite since 2001. Marshall has just three starters back on each side of ball; they struggled to beat William & Mary last week. Herd is 4-2 as dog since '93, 2-0 as home dog since '00.

-- Maryland covered last five games in row vs Clemson, winning last two at this site, 37-20/21-7. Clemson beat Texas A&M at gun last week, but their offense got no TD's, kicking six FG's, and QB Whitehurst missed last quarter after blow to head. Maryland needed fourth quarter comeback to beat Navy. Terps covered 17 of last 24 home games, nine of last 13 home openers. Home side covered ten of last fifteen series games.

-- Temple lost six starters to academics, they just can't overcome that, and got blasted 63-16 by an Arizona State club that ran up score a little. Wisconsin was down 13-0 early, gave up 450+ passing yards, but survived Bowling Green, 49-35. Badgers are 5-1-1 in last seven as home favorite, but just 7-15 vs spread in last 22 non-league games. Normally-spunky Owls covered 12 of last 16 after a loss, 16 of last 24 as road dog.

-- Dog covered eight of last nine Notre Dame-Michigan games, and 15 of last 18. Irish beat Wolverines last year, 28-20, outrushing Big Blue, 135-56. Irish ran ball down Pitt's throat last week, led 35-13 at half; they have whole OL back and experienced QB. Wolverines are 7-16-1 vs spread as single digit favorite since '98.

-- Oklahoma lost to TCU last week, so they change QB's this week, for Tulsa foe that Sooners won last two meetings against by combined score of 95-0. OU covered six of last seven games that followed a loss. Tulsa is just 3-17 vs spread as road dog, 8-23 on grass. -- Boston College had good road win last week at BYU, has ACC opener next week, gets Army here; coach O'Brien is Navy man. Doubtful he would run it up on service team, but BC is 8-3 vs spread in last eleven series games and 21-11 vs spread at home. Army, now an independent, is 4-7-1 vs spread in road openers.

-- Minnesota won 34-16 at Colorado State last year, running ball for whopping 360 yards with plus-4 turnover ratio. Gophers won big at Tulsa last week, while Rams tossed four picks in final 16:00, lost at gun in Boulder, 31-28. State is 16-6-1 as dog, but just 8-13 vs spread on faster carpet. Minnesota covered seven of last nine home openers, is 28-18 as favorite under Mason.

-- Hawai'i beat Michigan State last year, 41-38, in game where Rainbows were called for five penalties, State for close to 20; the officiating was borderline corrupt. Now that Spartans have Hawai'i on mainland (1-10 vs spread in last 11 on land) and revenge is sweet. Line in this one opened at 24.5, rose as high as 34, before settling back down at 32. MSU just 5-13-1 in last 19 tries as home favorite. Hawai's failed to cover last five as road dog, and seven of last ten road openers.

-- Cal QB Longshore broke his leg last week; backup Ayoob was 0-10, so third-stringer Levy got to play, and did OK. Bears won last three games vs Washington by average score of 43-16; they had 304 rushing yards in last year's 42-12 win. Huskies 2-8-1 vs spread in last 11 Pac-10 openers while Cal is 14-6-1 on Pac-10 road and 16-7 vs spread in last 23 conference games.

-- Georgia Tech had huge win at Auburn last week; they get chance here to avenge 34-13 loss to Tar Heels, when UNC ran ball for 284 yards as 8-point dog. First game for Heels, who have new QB but nine starters back on defense; they're 12-8 vs spread as road dog. Tech is 5-9 as home favorite since 2001, but 8-3 vs spread in this series.

-- Northern Illinois hung in at Michigan last week; they're 17-8 vs spread after a loss, 15-7 in last 22 non-league games, and 14-8 vs spread on grass. Northwestern is 5-0-1 vs NIU (76 miles from Evanston) (2-0 vs spread); they routed Ohio U 38-14 last week.

-- Iowa State covered six of last seven games vs rival Hawkeyes, as visitor covered 14 of last 18 series games, and faves covered 8 of last 12. Iowa is 17-9 vs spread after win; they hammered helpless Ball State (13 suspensions) last week, 56-0. Hawkeyes just 4-5 in last nine away games, with wins by 6,2,10 and 2 points, so they're vulnerable on foreign soil. Cyclones just 3-10 as a home doh, but 21-10 vs spread after a win.

-- Stanford opens Walt Harris era at Navy, which let Maryland slip away in fourth quarter last week; Cardinal covered 16 of last 20 September games, six of last seven as favorite; they have whole OL back and junior QB with 13 starts under his belt. Navy put carpet down this year; Stanford is 5-10-1 vs spread on plastic, Navy 18-7.

-- Boise State is 13-4 vs spread after loss, but they got pounded last week by Georgia, 48-13; you have to question their mental level after that, as they go into refurbished Reser Stadium to play Oregon State squad they whacked 53-34 on blue carpet last year (total yardage was 492-469, Boise, as Broncos had 246 yards rushing, 246 passing). Beavers are 20-6 as home fave, and 26-12 vs spread after win.

-- Nebraska QB Taylor was at Wake Forest for two years, before going JC, then on to Lincoln, where he was 15-36 passing last week in 25-7 win over Maine. Huskers are 6-14 vs spread after a win; 42% passing indicates they're still struggling with pass attack. Wake Forest is 10-5-1 as road dog, with six outright wins; they get star RB Barclay back from suspension here. Deacons are 3-9 vs spread after a loss.

-- Alabama covered seven of last eight games vs Southern Miss, winning last three by combined score of 64-13. Golden Eagles were displaced by hurricane, lived in Memphis; they covered ten of last 13 road openers, but just four of last 10 non-league games. In last year's game, teams passed for a combined 95 yards.

-- Ohio State used backup QB Zwick in easy win over Miami, OH last week; now they get Smith back from suspension- how that does that transition work? Buckeyes are 8-5 vs spread in non-league games 17-10 vs spread at home under Tressel. Texas is 10-14 vs spread in non-league games under Brown. First time these powers have ever met.

-- LSU now visiting Tempe, due to hurricane-related issues; Tigers had their game postponed last week- they're 6-4-1 vs spread when facing Pac-10 foe. Sun Devils pounded on lowly Temple last week, now they get the big boys. First game at LSU for former Oklahoma State coach Miles.

-- TCU shocked Oklahoma last week, now they are favorite at SMU team they outgained 562-170 last year, outrushing them, 165-6. Mustangs are 5-13 vs spread after a loss; they loss tight home game to Baylor last week, 28-23. Road team is 16-7 vs spread in this local (Dallas-Fort Worth) rivalry. Frogs won last three visits to this site, by average score of 40-10.

-- Colorado now 9-21 vs spread in last thirty non-league games, but they're 6-1 vs spread before a bye and 8-4-1 if double digit home favorite; Buffs snuck out 31-28 win in rivalry game last week; they face pass-happy New Mexico State squad that is still adjusted to Mumme's system; they are 8-4 vs spread after loss.
