| Virginia sitting four players for unspecified infractions CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Starting safety Tony Franklin, one of four Virginia captains, and three others were suspended for a violation of team policy and will miss Saturday's critical game against No. 24 Georgia Tech, the school said Thursday. Franklin, a junior who has started 26 games for Virginia (5-3, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), will sit out the game along with nose tackle Kwakou Robinson, reserve wide receiver Ottowa Anderson and reserve defensive end Vince Redd. Robinson was listed as a starter earlier in the week. The Cavaliers' game against the Yellow Jackets (6-2, 4-2) is the first of three more opportunities for Virginia to get its sixth victory and qualify for a bowl game. They also host No. 8 Virginia Tech next weekend, then travel to No. 4 Miami for the final game of the regular season on Nov. 26. Coach Al Groh on Wednesday acknowledged that there was an internal investigation underway, but did not reveal the nature of the infractions that may have occurred. In a two-sentence release Thursday, the school did not say whether the suspensions were for one game or more, but Groh indicated that hasn't been determined. "We'll review things as time goes on and, as I said in the statement, it's an internal matter that will be handled internally," he said in his regular teleconference with reporters. "It will not be a distraction to me or the team, so I'm done with it." Franklin is third on the team with 42 tackles and has two interceptions. Robinson has been in on 20 stops and Redd six. Anderson, who missed all of last season after being academically ineligible, has caught nine passes for 168 yards this season. Groh said Franklin's spot will be filled by freshman walk-on Byron Glaspy, who saw his first action of the season last week, playing 38 plays against Temple. Robinson's suspension comes a week after Ron Darden, one of two other nose tackles in Groh's rotation, left the team because of recurring headaches. That leaves Keenan Carter as the lone nose tackle, and Groh said defensive end Brennan Schmidt will play some at nose tackle, with Allen Billyk filling in for Schmidt and Redd.
