| The NFL is preparing for it's first regular- season overseas game in history, on October 28th, 2007 at London's Wembly Stadium. The New York Giants and Miami Dolphins will do battle in front of a sold out crowd, it took less than two hours to sell out with over 500,000 requests within 72 hours of its announcement. FOX will cover the game live for U.S.viewers,Sky Sports will cover it live in the UK. Prior to this game NFL Teams have played other games outside the Country with some great success and attendance figures at some games in excess of 100,000. American Bowls -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- American Bowl Series History 1986-2006 The National Football League’s American Bowl series of international games began in 1986 as a response to the growing interest in American football around the world. Since that time, 39 games have been played in 12 cities outside the United States – Tokyo (11 games), London (8), Berlin (5), Montreal (1), Barcelona (2), Mexico City (5), Monterrey (1), Toronto (2), Dublin (1), Vancouver (1), Sydney (1) and Osaka (1) -- under the NFL umbrella. Attendance at these games has been phenomenal. More than two million fans -- 2,205,732 -- have attended these games for an average of 59,614 per game. Twenty-six teams have represented the NFL outside the United States. The Chicago Bears, featuring ‘Refrigerator’ Perry, and the Dallas Cowboys met in the first American Bowl game, presented in London’s Wembley Stadium in 1986. The Bears defeated the Cowboys, 17-6, before 82,699 fans. Eight consecutive American Bowl games were played in London from 1986-1993. In 1989, the NFL expanded the series to Tokyo, Japan. The game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers in the new Tokyo Dome, won by San Francisco, 16-13 in overtime, was quickly a sellout. Tokyo has hosted a record 11 American Bowl games. The series came to Osaka, Japan in 2002, as the Washington Redskins earned a 38-7 win over the 49ers at the Osaka Dome in the debut of Redskins’ head coach Steve Spurrier. Continental Europe and a “new” Berlin was the site of an American Bowl for the first time in 1990 when the Rams prevailed over the Chiefs, 19-3, in Olympic Stadium. Five American Bowl games were played in Berlin, the last in 1994 when the New York Giants defeated the Chargers, 28-20. In 1994, the largest crowd in the history of the NFL -- 112,376 -- packed Azteca Stadium in Mexico City to witness the first American Bowl in Mexico between the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers. Houston downed the defending Super Bowl champion Cowboys, 6-0. The second and fourth largest in-stadium audiences also took place in Azteca Stadium. In 1998, 106,424, attended the New England Patriots 21-3 victory over Dallas and 104,629 witnessed the Dolphins 38-19 triumph over the Broncos in 1997. Canada has hosted four American Bowls. The NFL visited Vancouver for the first time in 1998 when the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks met in B.C. Place. The Buffalo Bills played two games in Toronto’s SkyDome, in 1997 against the Packers and in 1995 against the Cowboys. The Steelers and Patriots met in the first American Bowl in Canada in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in 1990. In 1999, the NFL traveled to Sydney, Australia for the first time. Before an enthusiastic crowd of 73,811 in Stadium Australia, centerpiece for the 2000 Olympic Games, the Denver Broncos defeated the San Diego Chargers 20-17. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Series by Year YEAR SITE TEAMS SCORE 1986 London Bears-Cowboys 17-6 1987 London Rams-Broncos 28-27 1988 London Dolphins-49ers 27-21 1989Tokyo Rams-49ers (OT)16-13 1989 London Eagles-Browns 17-13 1990 Tokyo Broncos-Seahawks 10-7 1990 London Saints-Raiders 17-10 1990 Montreal Steelers-Patriots 30-14 1990 Berlin Rams-Chiefs 19-3 1991 London Bills-Eagles 17-13 1991 Berlin 49ers-Bears 21-7 1991Tokyo Dolphins-Raiders 19-17 1992 Tokyo Oilers-Cowboys 34-23 1992 Berlin Dolphins-Broncos 31-27 1992 London 49ers-Redskins 17-15 1993 Tokyo Saints-Eagles 28-16 1993 Barcelona 49ers-Steelers 21-14 1993 Berlin Vikings-Bills 20-6 1993 London Cowboys-Lions* (OT) 13-13 1994 Barcelona Raiders-Broncos 25-22 1994 Tokyo Vikings-Chiefs 17-9 1994 Berlin Giants-Chargers 28-20 1994 Mexico City Oilers-Cowboys 6-0 1995 Tokyo Broncos-49ers 24-10 1995 Toronto Bills-Cowboys 9-7 1996 Monterey,Mex.
