COWBOYS K NICK FOLK NAMED NFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 5

Quarterback JASON CAMPBELL of the Washington Redskins, cornerback ROD HOOD of the Arizona Cardinals and rookie kicker NICK FOLK of the Dallas Cowboys are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the 2007 season (October 7-8), the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: QB JASON CAMPBELL, WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Campbell completed 23 of 29 passes (79.3 percent) for 248 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 125.3 passer rating in the Redskins’ 34-3 victory over Detroit. The three-year veteran completed passes to eight different receivers on the day and recorded career-highs in completions (23), yards (248), completion percentage (79.3) and passer rating (125.3). The Redskins amassed 366 total yards and the team’s 34 points were the most scored in regulation by Washington since 12/24/05 (35 points vs. New York Giants).

In his third season from Auburn, this is Campbell’s first career Offensive Player of the Week Award. Campbell is the first Redskins quarterback to be honored since Week 1 of 2002 (SHANE MATTHEWS).


DEFENSE: CB ROD HOOD, ARIZONA CARDINALS

The five-year veteran had five tackles, three passes defensed and a career-high two interceptions, including a 68-yard interception-return touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals the lead for good in Arizona’s 34-31 win at St. Louis. Hood’s 68-yard interception-return touchdown was the first touchdown of his career, and his first touchdown since he played wide receiver and quarterback at Carver High School in Columbus, GA. Hood, in his first season with Arizona, is the first Cardinal with two interceptions in a game since KARLOS DANSBY in Week 1 of 2005.

In his fifth year from Auburn, this is Hood’s first career Defensive Player of the Week Award. Hood is the first Cardinals cornerback to be honored since Week 10 of 2000 (AENEAS WILLIAMS).


SPECIAL TEAMS: K NICK FOLK, DALLAS COWBOYS

· Folk converted all four field-goal attempts, including the game-winner from 53 yards out as time expired in the Cowboys’ 25-24 comeback victory at Buffalo. It marked the longest game-winning field goal with no time remaining by a rookie kicker in NFL history. The sixth-round selection (No. 178) also set up the game-winning score with a successful onside kick with 20 seconds remaining that was recovered by TONY CURTIS. Folk kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the first half and added a 29-yarder in the third quarter. He then converted both fourth-quarter tries, a 37-yarder to get Dallas within 24-16 and the game-winner from 53 yards out.

In his rookie season from Arizona, this is Folk’s first career Player of the Week Award. Folk is the first Cowboys rookie kicker to be honored since Week 4 of 2002 (BILLY CUNDIFF).

New York Giants wide receiver PLAXICO BURRESS, who had five catches for 124 yards and one touchdown in the Giants’ 35-24 win over the Jets.
Arizona wide receiver LARRY FITZGERALD, who had nine catches for 136 yards and one touchdown.
Chicago quarterback BRIAN GRIESE, who completed 15 of 25 passes (60.0 percent) for 214 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for a 97.8 passer rating in the Bears’ 27-20 win at Green Bay.

Other nominees for NFC Defensive Player of Week 5 were:

St. Louis cornerback FAKHIR BROWN, who had nine tackles, six passes defensed and two interceptions.
Washington defensive end ANDRE CARTER, who had eight tackles, two sacks and a safety. The Redskins’ defense allowed 144 net yards, including 76 passing yards.
Chicago cornerback CHARLES TILLMAN, who had four tackles and forced two fumbles.
New York Giants rookie cornerback AARON ROSS, who had two tackles and two interceptions, including a 43-yard interception-return touchdown.

Other nominees for NFC Special Teams Player of Week 5 were:

Carolina punter JASON BAKER, who punted four times for a 49.8-yard average and a 47.0-yard net average in the Panthers’ 16-13 win at New Orleans.
Carolina kicker JOHN KASAY, who converted all three field-goal attempts, including the game-winner from 52 yards out as time expired in the Panthers’ 16-13 victory at New Orleans.
St. Louis punter DONNIE JONES, who averaged 56.0-yards per punt, the highest single-game average in franchise history, with a long of 60 yards.
San Francisco punter ANDY LEE, who had seven punts for a 51.6-yard average, including a long of 74 yards in the 49ers’ 9-7 loss versus Baltimore.
Chicago punter BRAD MAYNARD, who punted seven times for a 44.9-yard average and 36.6-yard net average, placing two inside the 20-yard line with a long of 56 yards.

CHARGERS QB PHILIP RIVERS, STEELERS CB IKE TAYLOR

& TEXANS K KRIS BROWN NAMED AFC PLAYERS OF WEEK 5

Quarterback PHILIP RIVERS of the San Diego Chargers, cornerback IKE TAYLOR of the Pittsburgh Steelers and kicker KRIS BROWN of the Houston Texans are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the 2007 season (October 7-8), the NFL announced today.

OFFENSE: QB PHILIP RIVERS, SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

In a 41-3 road victory over the Broncos, Rivers completed 13 of 18 (72.2 percent) passed for 270 yards with two touchdowns and a career-best 151.4 passer rating. Rivers scored his first rushing touchdown of his career on a two-yard run for the Chargers’ first score of the game. The Chargers accounted for 484 total yards and posted the club’s most points in a regular-season game since 12/10/06 against the Broncos (48).

In his fourth year from North Carolina State, this is Rivers’ second Player of the Week Award.

DEFENSE: CB IKE TAYLOR, PITTSBURGH STEELERS

· Taylor played a key role in the Steelers’ 21-0 shutout against the Seahawks. The veteran cornerback notched five tackles, one interception and four passes defensed as the Steelers recorded their first shutout at Heinz Field and their first home shutout since 10/15/00 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Taylor registered his second interception of the season at Pittsburgh’s goal line on the final play of the first half to end Seattle’s best chance for a score in the game.

In his fifth year from Louisiana-Lafayette, this is Taylor’s first Player of the Week Award.


SPECIAL TEAMS: K KRIS BROWN, HOUSTON TEXANS

· Brown connected on all five field goal attempts, including a career-long 57-yard game-winning field goal as the Texans beat the Dolphins 22-19 for the best start in franchise history (3-2, .600). Brown tied an NFL record with three field goals of 50-plus yards (54, 54 and 57), joining MORTEN ANDERSEN and NEIL RACKERS as the only three kickers in history to accomplish the feat. The Texas native also was the first player in NFL history to make three field goals of 54 yards or longer in a game. Brown set a team record for most points in a game with 16, surpassing his previous mark of 15.

In his ninth season from Nebraska, this is Brown’s sixth Player of the Week Award.

· Pittsburgh quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER, who completed 18 of 22 passes (81.8 percent) for 206 yards with one touchdown and a 120.8 passer rating.

· New England tight end BENJAMIN WATSON, who totaled a career-high 107 receiving yards on six receptions and two touchdowns in a 34-17 win over Cleveland.

· Kansas City defensive end JARED ALLEN, who recorded four tackles, 1.5 sacks and four quarterback hurries.

· Buffalo defensive end CHRIS KELSAY, who totaled two tackles, one quarterback pressure, one pass defensed and an interception-return touchdown.

· New England linebacker JUNIOR SEAU, who posted six tackles, two passes defensed and tied a career-high with two interceptions.

· Jacksonville linebacker DARYL SMITH, who recorded nine tackles and a career-high four passes defensed in a 17-7 win over the Chiefs.
