| For those that have enough energy to get through the turkey dinner, and two NFL games, you can tune in to see the “Backyard Brawl” between the Panthers and Mountaineers. Pittsburgh had high hopes at the beginning of the season that this game would decide the Big East Championship, but it wasn't meant to be as the Panthers are a disappointing 5-5 on the season. Things just haven’t gone as expected under new coach Dave Wannstedt. It was ugly to start the season as Pitt lost four of the first five games. Their only win was in a non-lined game over Youngstown State. However, the Panthers have salvaged the season by winning four of the last five ball games, including a 24-0 win over UConn on November 12. The Panthers need to upset West Virginia to become bowl eligible. Pitt has gone to a bowl in each of the last five years. It would be a little embarrassing for Wannstedt to be sitting at home during the holidays. Last year, Pitt defeated West Virginia at home 16-13. It was a small upset as the Panthers were 3-point home dogs. However, the previous year here in Morgantown the Panthers were pasted 52-31 as 1-point favorites. This game is kind of anticlimactic for West Virginia. Win or lose here against Pitt, the Mountaineers play South Florida for the Big East title and the automatic bowl bid, assuming USF gets by Connecticut this weekend. Could this be a look-a-head game for West Virginia? Rich Rodriguez has guided this team to a very impressive 8-1 season. Their only blemish was the 34-17 home loss to Virginia Tech. West Virginia’s biggest win of the season came three games back when they beat Louisville 46-44 at home as 7-point pups. The Sportsbooks don’t expect West Virginia to be looking past this game as the Mountaineers are all the way up to 13-point favorites. The opening line listed them as 9-point chalk. The total is a low 44 points. Maybe the high line is due to Pittsburgh’s inability to play well on the road. Over the last two seasons the Panthers are an awful 1-8 ATS playing a conference away game.
