| This is the Sunday Primer column where we will briefly focus on the top five sporting events of the day, starting with the best event. Sundays are ingrained into our sports minds as “NFL football day”, but there is plenty of good action during the other six months of the year. 1) Villanova (+7) at Connecticut It is not too often when you get college basketball’s number two and number four teams squaring off this late in the year. Connecticut is looking for revenge after a 69-64 loss at Villanova back on February 13th. There will be a full write-up of this game posted early on Sunday. 2) Auto Club 500 NASCAR follows up its biggest event of the year, the Daytona 500, with the Auto Club 500 in front of 100,000 plus patrons at the California Speedway. Greg Biffle is the favorite at 6:1, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart are right behind him at 7:1, and last week's Daytona winner, Jimmy Johnson, is fourth at 8:1. 3) Cleveland (+9) at Detroit This is an NBA contest where we will see what happens when one superstar, LeBron James, pretty much tries to beat a great team single handily. At the end of this game, James will know how Michael Jordan felt after facing the 1986 Boston Celtics in the playoffs. It should still be a very interesting game though. 4) California (+7.5) at Washington This is a great battle between two of the top teams in the PAC-10 conference. California actually has the better conference record even though the Huskies are ranked higher, and considered the better team. Cal won the earlier meeting between the teams, 71-69 at Berkeley. 5) Florida (-1) at Alabama Florida is the 9th ranked team in the country as of last week’s rankings, but something is rotten in Gainesville right now. Florida has lost its last two games and they are not the same dominant team that they were earlier in the season. Alabama is fighting for an NCAA tournament berth, and a win in this game could seal the deal. Bonus Game: Boston at LA Lakers There is no line for this game yet. It is true that there will no legendary battles of Bill Russell versus Wilt Chamberlain, or Larry Bird against Magic Johnson, but there is something to be said for the greatest rivalry in NBA history. This current version features Paul Pierce versus Kobe Bryant, with both teams playing decent basketball right now. http://edge.vipsports.com/ Last edited by Tommy : 02-26-06 at 08:59 AM. |
