Opinion Selection (1% of Bankroll)

NY Jets +3 over WASHINGTON

Patrick Ramsey will be front and center on Saturday night in the nation’s capital. Actually, he’ll be behind center as he takes the field in a Jets uniform to face his former Redskins teammates. Ramsey started 24 games in four seasons with Washington before being traded to New York this past spring and will see extended time on Saturday, especially since Chad Pennington has been excused from the team while he tends to some personal business. Following Ramsey in the Jets QB rotation will be Brooks Bollinger and rookie Kellen Clemens.

The Redskins will be without Clinton Portis for this game and the remainder of the preseason after dislocating his shoulder in last Sunday’s loss at Cincinnati. QB Mark Brunell is expected to play about only 1 quarter before yielding to 2nd-year player Jason Campbell and journeyman Todd Collins. Elsewhere on Washington’s injury front, cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Ade Jimoh, and end Philip Daniels will miss this game, while WR Brandon Lloyd is questionable.

Besides Ramsey, Lavernious Coles will also be returning to play his previous team. Washington traded Coles to the Jets for Santana Moss, but not before Coles had a conversation with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder that didn't go too well. At the time he said Snyder threatened to blackball him, saying: "He was going to mail me a television because that was the closest I would get to an NFL team. 'Because I'm an owner I can make your life a living hell.'" Coles hasn’t talked much about the situation this week, but did say "I've always forgiven but I've never forgotten."

Obviously, both Ramsey and Coles will have a bit of a chip on their shoulder when taking on the Skins Saturday night.

As for Washington, the team has more pressing concerns at the moment. Because of the injuries and signings - the Redskins have turned over eight players this week - Coach Joe Gibbs referred to his reserve situation as "unsettled."

The result is a sudden urgency on the part of the coaches to find out quickly which players will be able to provide them the solid reinforcements that allow good teams to survive injuries. There also is urgency for the new players, who must grasp the teams' complicated offensive and defensive systems without much time to learn or impress.

Washington’s coaches were very unhappy with the 2nd-line players on both sides of the ball last week, so their goal is to get the new players acclimated and work them in on the fly. It’s not conducive to error-free play in this game, but winning this contest is not the Redskins goal.

"We're getting ready for Minnesota, and the guys coming in right now will probably not play an important part in that game, so we can't stop now," OC Al Saunders said.

We also note that after scoring less than 6 points in an exhibition opener, NFLX road/neutral site teams not favored by more than 2 points are 12-0 ATS since the late 1980s. Being more focused on the task at hand, we look for the New Yorkers to bounce back with a stronger effort here.

Our information from SportsInsights indicates that about 2 of every 3 bettors on this game are backing the Redskins, giving us an opportunity to fade the public. As more money comes in on Washington and word spreads during the day on Saturday that Pennington will not play, we could easily see the line move to -3½ or higher, so we recommend placing this wager late.
