6 STAR SELECTION (4.5% of Bankroll)

JACKSONVILLE +1 over Dallas

Terrell Owens and the Cowboys take on the Jaguars in Sunday afternoon’s featured NFL attraction for the opening weekend. “T.O” was signed by Dallas in the off-season, scarcely practiced during training camp, and played only briefly in one preseason game. The hoopla surrounding Owens has overshadowed the work of a Jacksonville team that comes off a 12-4 regular season and its first playoff appearance since 1999.

QB Drew Bledsoe begins his second season as the starter in Big D. He started all 16 games for the Cowboys last season, showing arm strength and touch but also displaying a continued lack of mobility. Bledsoe was sacked an NFC-high 49 times in 2005, and Dallas did little to upgrade its offensive line in the offseason. That could be big trouble on Sunday, as they go up against a Jags team that ranked 7th in the league against the pass a year ago and has upgraded their secondary.

Bill Parcells is also hoping the Cowboys running game will get on track after failing to do much during his tenure in Dallas. It won’t be easy against a Jacksonville team that has a big and talented defensive front.

Jacksonville fans are looking for Byron Leftwich and the Jaguar passing game to get going against a Dallas team that has completed transition from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4. Set to begin his ninth season in the Jacksonville backfield is running back Fred Taylor. Second-round draft pick Maurice Jones-Drew from UCLA is a 5-foot-7 back tornado who will be very dangerous, especially when he gets the ball, whether it be from scrimmage or on kick returns.

Speaking of special teams, the Jags will have a big edge here, which could be the difference in a close game. Josh Scobee, entering his third year with the Jaguars, has developed into a dependable kicker who made 23 of 30 field goal attempts last year. He also had a big leg and had 20 touchbacks. Meanwhile, Dallas signed Mike Vanderjagt to shore up their kicking problems, but so far he’s been a mess and may not even be able to play on Sunday.

With the public anticipating a “T.O” explosion and taken in by the Cowboys preseason play, they have moved this line from Jacksonville being a FG favorite to the visiting Cowboys a slight favorite. This is anything but an easy opening-day draw for Dallas. It will be hot and humid, and the Jaguars will not be in a friendly mood, feeling they are being disrespected. Since 1996, Jacksonville is 5-0 ATS at home in game 1, pounding the spread by more than 2 TDs per game on average. They are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 season openers, and 6-1 ATS at home when not favored by 2+ points. Only 5 teams since 1989 have not been favored by 3+ points in their home opener off a season with 11+ wins. Those teams are 5-0 ATS in this rare spot.

Meanwhile, Dallas qualifies for a PRO INFO SPORTS NFL POWER SYSTEM from Section 1 of the 2006 NFL POWER SYSTEM e-CYCLOPEDIA which outlines:

In Game 1, play AGAINST a team (not a favorite of more than 5 points or underdog of more than 3 points) before a game next week and a bye the week after that vs. an opponent not playing a non-division road contest in its next game.

Teams in this “early bye” situation are an ugly 0-15 ATS since 1993, failing to cover the spread by nearly 11 points a game on average. Dallas was active in this spot in their 2003 opener under Parcells, as they hosted Atlanta. The Falcons, without Michael Vick, beat the ‘Boys 27-13 as 2-point road underdogs.

While preseason hype has moved this line, we’ll stick with a known commodity. Jacksonville is a mean, nasty team that is very hard to beat, especially at home. They had little trouble disposing of the eventual NFC Champion Seahawks last year in their opener, and we see them serving up a reminder of why they were a playoff team a year ago and shouldn’t be forgotten in 2006.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: JACKSONVILLE 24 DALLAS 14

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: JACKSONVILLE 24 DALLAS 17
