Tom Stryker – 12-1-1 ATS NCAA Sweet Tourney Set Free Play For Thursday From Matt Fargo Davidson Wildcats vs. Maryland Terrapins 12:20 PM ET Davidson Wildcats +7.5 -110 Maryland enters this game a surprising number four seed even though the Terrapins closed the regular season very hot. Maryland, which resurrected some bad habits in a first-round ACC tournament loss to last place Miami, could be susceptible to any opponent at this point. This team was inconsistent for a better part of the season and despite a veteran team, that inconsistency can catch up at any time. The Terrapins outscored opponents by just one ppg on the road this season while shooting a miserable 66 percent from the stripe. Davidson comes in as one of the hottest teams in the country and the fact it is from the Southern Conference means nothing. The Wildcats have won 13 straight games and 25 of their last 26 and they feel slighted with their seeding as they are out to prove something. Two of their four losses came at Michigan by just 10 points and at Missouri by just six points so they have proved they can play with the big boys and on the road no less. This team is confident which isn’t often seen from teams from the smaller conferences playing against the ACC. Davidson is led by Stephen Curry, one of the best and unheard of freshmen in the entire country. Curry is 10th in the nation with 21.2 ppg which is the second-highest average among freshmen behind Texas' Kevin Durant. A high scorer is important but more important this time of year is a veteran floor general and the Wildcats have just that. Point guard Jason Richards is a junior and is second in the nation with 7.3 apg and leads the offense that has put up a solid 1.13 assist/turnover ratio. Richards has a 2.35 ratio. These teams have had opposite histories when going up against good competition. Davidson is 8-1 ATS in road games in the second half of the season when playing against teams that have a winning percentage of 60 percent or better over the last 3 seasons. Conversely, Maryland is 8-18 ATS in road games against teams that are outscoring their opponents by 4 or more ppg over the last 3 seasons. It would not be surprising to see the underachieving Terrapins lose this game outright but we don’t need it as the hefty line is enough. | Free Play For Thursday From Larry Ness Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Indiana Hoosiers 9:55 PM ET Indiana Hoosiers -1.5 -105 Gonzaga makes its NINTH straight NCAA appearance, an amazing accomplishment by a school most had never heard of a little more than a decade ago. It's been a tough year for the Bulldogs this season, as they lost Adam Morrison and JP Batista off last year's team and then in mid-February, the team's best inside player, the 6-11 Josh Heytvelt (15.5-7.7), got himself in some serious off-the-court problems, resulting in his suspension. The school lost back-to-back home games to Santa Clara and Memphis (ending its 50-game home winning streak) but then regrouped to win its last five games (both SU and ATS), on its way to its EIGHTH WCC tourney title in nine years. However, the WCC was down this year and I don't believe Gonzaga will stay around long in this tourney. In fact, I expect them to go out here, vs Indiana. The Hoosiers have the 6-9 DJ White (13.7-7.0) to take advantage of Heytvelt's absence inside plus a very strong perimeter game (four guys get significant playing time, averaging between 9.4 and 12.5 PPG). Gonzaga's strength, without Heytvelt, is its guards, Raivio (18.2) and Pargo (12.2-4.4-4.6). The Bulldogs won't have an edge in this game plus Indiana brings some extra-motivation to the playing court, as the Bulldogs eliminated the Hoosiers in last year's second round, 90-80. Indiana returns the favor here, a round early! Take Indiana. |
