Saturday's GAMEDAY INVESTMENT FREe-LERT:

1 STAR SELECTION

DENVER -1 over Indianapolis

The Colts will be seeking their first win of the 2005 preseason on Saturday in Denver, where the Broncos will be looking for a little revenge against the team that has blasted them out of the playoffs the last 2 seasons. Indianapolis is sitting at 0-3 after dropping the American Bowl in Tokyo to the Falcons before returning home. There, they lost to the Bills and Bears in the past 2 weeks. Denver, meanwhile, is 2-0 in exhibition play with victories in Houston and at home last week over the 49ers.

Both teams are likely to play their starters into the third quarter. Indy has been sloppy on offense thus far, as they have suffered from jet lag and lack of concentration, not to mention some injuries. They will also be a bit short-handed at the QB position for this game, after projected backup Travis Brown went down for the year against Chicago last week. Incumbent #2 Jim Sorgi and Tom Arth are the only quarterbacks besides Manning presently on the roster.

Denver will be hoping for more of the same out of quarterback Jake Plummer, who has been sharp enough to elicit an impressive 131.7 passer rating through two preseason games. He will have plenty of help in the backfield, as the Broncos have a deep stable of talented running backs that will give them fresh legs throughout the game.

While this may be “only” a practice game, Denver is ready to “get it on”. The impact of the consecutive playoff blowouts was felt by defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban, who wasn't even part of them. "You kind of heard it every day for a little bit," Ekuban said. "I'm new to the club, this is my first year, but when I got here, the talk was the Colts. Just being in the playoffs the last two years and having them beat us, so even though it's the preseason, we still want to do some things to make sure we found the right solution to solving that problem."

"It's a great challenge," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan added. "Any time you go against an offense that scored more points than anybody in the National Football League, it's a great challenge for our defense. "

"You never want to lose," Denver LB Ian Gold said. "I don't know any guy out here who says, 'I want to go out and lose a game.' They beat us in the playoffs, and I look forward to getting out there and trying to get a win."

"It's all about going out against Indianapolis," Bronco LB Keith Burns chimed in. "Some people say preseason doesn't mean anything, but to us, this game means a whole lot."

Denver also has several technical factors in their favor. They are a strong 20-5 ATS in Saturday games and an amazing 10-1 ATS off a spread loss. In looking at some preseason systems, we note that home teams off 2 SU wins are 15-4 ATS when playing an opponent off 2+ losses.

While Peyton Manning and the Colts 1st-string offense figures to play better this week and do some damage, it’ll be the Broncos with momentum and motivation on their side. They’ve had this game circled on their preseason schedule and we look for them to make a bit of a statement here with a SU & ATS win.
