After dropping all 4 practice games last year and stumbling through a 2-14 season, the ‘Niners have been quite competitive in the preseason, winning 2 and going 3-0 ATS. The Chargers fell to 1-2, dropping a 19-16 decision to the Minnesota Vikings. One weakness for San Fran thus far has been the play of their offensive line. It made for a bad combination with a rookie QB trying to find his way in the NFL. Both sides of that equation have now been addressed, as Tim Rattay was named the new starting QB last week, while Alex Smith observe from the sidelines and came off the bench late for the game-winning drive. The story for the 49ers this week will be the probable return of a pair of offensive linemen - center Jeremy Newberry and guard David Baas. Newberry, a two-time Pro Bowler, who will again the line and be a big boost. Rattay gets the start here again, coming off another strong performance, his 3rd in a row. Smith will relieve him in the first half, and we look for him to relax and play his best ball of the preseason. Ken Dorsey and Cody Pickett are the 3rd and 4th string QBs, who have also played well in his preseason, giving San Francisco a strong rotation. San Diego is expected to play its starters sparingly against the 49ers. That means about a quarter of work for signal-caller Drew Brees, but NO work for RB LaDainian Tomlinson, who will be held out again to keep him fresh for regular season. Philip Rivers and Chet Lemon will be doing most of the quarterbacking for the Chargers in this contest. San Diego will be playing for the third time in 12 days, and open the season at home against Dallas, so you’ll have to excuse them if they don’t have much in the tank here. The Bolts are the only team in the NFL that returns all 22 starters on offense and defense, plus their punter, kicker and long snapper, so there are no position battles to be won on the field here. That’s all the more reason for the starters to get off the field early. Besides the fact that San Diego is 0-4 ATS as a favorite of more than 6 points, we have 7 of our preseason systems active here, ALL of which indicate a play ON San Fran. For example, Week 4 road teams with 2+ SU wins are a blistering 17-2 ATS vs. opponents with exactly 1 preseason victory. Thursday home teams off a SU loss are an ugly 2-12 ATS and just 7-20 ATS off a road game. This year has been no different for exhibition underdogs of more than 4 points. Coming into this year they had covered 39 of the past 56 such games, good for 70%. This season they are 7-3 ATS, right on 70%. San Francisco has been an underdog in their 3 previous games and we look for them to hang tough here, as they have done all preseason, and get the ATS win, while a SU win is certainly also a good possibility. FINAL SCORE: SAN DIEGO 28 SAN FRANCISCO 24 2 STAR SELECTION (2.5% of Bankroll) CONNECTICUT -17½ over Buffalo U-Conn will host Buffalo in one of the season-opening college football games on Thursday. The Huskies have a budding program, with 23 victories over the past three years. Last season the team went to its first bowl game and slapped Toledo around, 39-10, in the Motor City Bowl. As for the Bulls, they posted just two victories last season, which equals their total wins from the previous 2 seasons combined. Only three 1-A teams (out of 119) were worse offensively than Buffalo last year. Coach Jim Hofher is now handing the keys to this offensive jalopy to junior quarterback Stewart Sampsel, who has yet to complete a pass in a college game. He’s not even listed in national preseason magazines, and will now try to make a name for himself in a hostile environment. The Bulls are hoping the rushing attack can keep the pressure off Sampsel as he matures; however, it won’t be easy here, as the D-line is the strength of the Huskies defense. U-Conn finished the 2004 campaign ranked 36th in national scoring defense and 27th in total defense. Tonight begins the post-Dan Orlovsky era and Connecticut fans are a bit concerned. Junior Matt Bonislawski, who has thrown just seven career passes, will get the start. There are absolutely no worries about the ground game as the Huskies have one of college football's premier tailback duo in Terry Caulley and Cornell Brockington. Caulley was the nation's leading rusher in 2003 before a severe knee injury cut short his season and cost him all of last season. Finally back to form, he is ready to make a huge splash. Brockington led the Big East with 1,218 yards on 238 carries last year to go along with 11 touchdowns. While the Bulls have numbers back on defense, they simply don’t have the talent or depth to keep up with a Connecticut team that has dominated them for a decade, winning eight of the nine meetings, including a 29-0 whitewash in Buffalo’s final regular season game last year. In fact, Buffalo has been held to a TD or less in 6 of last 8 games vs. U-Conn, with 3 shutouts. The last 3 meetings have been 24-3, 38-7, and 29-0 SU & ATS wins for the Huskies. In looking at some other numbers, we note that Connecticut is 17-4-1 ATS when scoring 28+ points, while Buffalo is 0-7 ATS & 2-17 ATS in the reverse role of allowing 28+ points. All-time, the Bulls are 0-6 SU & ATS when allowing non-conference opponents 25+ points and not getting 31+ points from the oddsmakers, and they have gone 0-4 SU & ATS on the road vs. non-conference foes over the past 2 seasons. Sure, Buffalo would like revenge but they just don’t have the horses. UConn was 3-0 SU & ATS last year vs. opponents playing with revenge, demonstrating their ability to beat teams and then beat them again. We also have a NCAA Football POWER SYSTEM active here that can be verified at the Sportsdatabase.com college football database. Game 1 road teams (not an underdog of 30+ points) seeking revenge…(CLASSIFIED CLIENT INFORMATION)…are 0-11 ATS, failing to cover the spread by nearly 11 points a game. This system has been perfect for 20 seasons and we look for history to repeat itself here, as we look for Connecticut to stampede over the Bulls for a big SU & ATS win.
