Thursday’s client-only

1 STAR SELECTION (2% of Bankroll)

NEW ENGLAND -7½ over Oakland

The 2005 NFL regular season kicks off on Thursday, as the Super Bowl Champion Patriots welcome the Raiders. For a team that’s been below .500% the past 2 years, Oakland is getting a lot of hype due to the off-season addition of perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver Randy Moss, and perhaps the reason the NFL has them opening the season here against New England in primetime.

The Patriots had their share of off-season changes as well. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis took the helm of the Notre Dame program, while defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel left to head up the Cleveland Browns. Linebackers Tedy Bruschi and Ted Johnson will not be in uniform this season. Bruschi is taking a year off from football following a minor stroke suffered in February, and Johnson retired on the eve of training camp due in part to a series of concussions sustained during a 10-year pro career.

While many are predicting that the Patriots will have trouble covering Randy Moss, someone has to be on the throwing end. In this game, it will be Raiders QB Kerry Collins, who can certainly throw a nice deep ball; however, he also has a penchant for tossing several balls a game to the guys in the wrong-colored jerseys. Collins had 21 TD passes last year, his first in Oakland, but nearly matched it with a league high-tying 20 interceptions. Additionally, he has not done well against New England with Belichick on the sidelines. His Giants could only manage 14 points in a 1999 loss at Foxboro with Belichick as Bill Parcells DC. In 2003, it was worse with Belichick as the head coach. The Giants managed just 3 points as Collins threw FOUR interceptions in a losing cause. Collins will need a complement to Moss to keep defenses honest, but the Raiders receiving corps is not healthy. Jerry Porter did not play a single snap in the preseason and is not 100%. Ronald Curry missed most of training camp while rehabbing from a torn Achilles suffered in December of last season and is not yet fully recovered.

Tom Brady will once again be at the controls of the New England offense, and will have a much deeper receiving corps than last year. The Patriots traded for former Brown Andre' Davis, who will start the season as a reserve behind holdovers Deion Branch and David Givens. The running game will again be in the capable hands of Corey Dillon, who established career highs in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns a season ago.

The Patriots start the season with a 20-game home winning streak, including playoffs. They are 24-3 overall at Gillette Stadium and will be motivated to start this season off with a victory. The season opening game is about as close to a playoff game in intensity as the regular season can offer, and when the Patriots are focused, which they usually are, the results are decisive. The champions are 13-1-1 ATS at home in SU wins when not favored by double digits, while the Raiders are an awful 1-18 ATS in road SU losses when not getting 8+ points.

It’s rare for the Super Bowl winner to open at home against a team that had a losing record from the previous season. Usually the NFL pits the defending champs against a top-qualify playoff team, like last year when New England hosted the Colts in an AFC Championship Game re-match. The few times that Super Bowl winners have played non-playoff teams, especially non-division teams, in the season opener, they have done well, which is what we expect here.

We don’t often back NFL favorites of more than a TD, but on occasion such a line does hold value, which we find here. The pointspread has fluctuated between New England -7 and -7½, exactly as the line did with the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Are the oddsmakers really suggesting that the Oakland Raiders should receive the same odds AT New England that a fantastic NFC Champion Eagles team did on a neutral field against the Patriots? Of course the spread is a reflection of public opinion to a great extent, and we feel this is a rare occasion when the public is under-valuing a Super Bowl Champion. Our Power Ratings also indicate that New England is 10+ points better than Oakland here, so we’ll side with the Patriots for a SU & ATS win.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: NEW ENGLAND 27 OAKLAND 16

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: NEW ENGLAND 30 OAKLAND 20
