Monday's Client-only 2 Star Selection LA CLIPPERS -3' over Denver It took 13 years, but the Clippers finally got another playoff win, as they beat the Nuggets, 89-87, in Game 1 of their first-round matchup Saturday night. LA nearly lost the home-court advantage in the opener by blowing a 10-point lead late, but Vladimir Radmanovic made two free throws with 59.8 seconds remaining to put the Clippers ahead and Denver star Carmelo Anthony missed three shots in the closing seconds that would have tied the game. LA figures to gain some more confidence after the close victory. "It's a learning experience," said point guard Sam Cassell. "It's never good to blow a 10-point lead. We got on-the-job experience." With the pressure of Game 1 out of the way, we expect the Clips to settle down with a stronger finish in Game 2. Denver has plenty of talent but they just aren't in top form at this point. Guard Earl Boykins and forward Kenyon Martin are both coming back from injuries and struggled on the offensive end in the game. After hiding his decision before game time, coach George Karl re-inserted Greg Buckner into the starting lineup at shooting guard. Although he dressed and was available, forward Eduardo Najera did not play. Before the game, Karl said he was concerned about Najera's right foot, as well as a sore right knee that he said has not completely healed from March surgery. The hurting lineup is hurting Denver's fast break gameplan, which Karl has already said they must execute to win. Playoff games tend to yield fewer transition points than the regular season. The key for the Nuggets in this series is how functional their fast break will be. Something figured to give as Denver was the NBA leader in fast-break points scored per game in the regular season, and the Clippers led the league in the least number of fast-break points allowed. Denver had just 10 fast-break points in the opening game. They trailed by 16 points in the 3rd quarter because of it and there's no reason to believe that Los Angeles will quit playing defense at this point, or that the Clippers will fold again late in the game. The Nuggets are in the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row, but they've been shown the door in the first round the last 2 seasons and this is not a good spot for them. They are 0-2 SU & ATS in each series with 1 loss, 0-2 SU & ATS in Game 2, and are 0-5 SU when trailing in the series, including 0-3 ATS the last 3. We took note of what Denver guard Earl Boykins said - "It's rare you have seven turnovers and lose a basketball game" - and discovered that such an outcome is not a good omen. NBA Playoff underdogs of 2+ points off an underdog SU loss with 10 or fewer TOs are 0-7 SU & ATS the last 2 years, losing by an average of 14 points and failing to cover by more than 8 points a game on average. Other NBA Playoff POWER SYSTEMS at our disposal are even more frightening for the Nuggets. Road underdogs or 7 points or less with a total over 169 off a road underdog spread win in which they trailed at the half are 0-12 SU & ATS since 2001, losing by nearly 15 points and failing to cover the spread by nearly 10 points a game on average. In the Clippers favor, we note that NBA Playoff home favorites with a total of 162'-194' are 13-0 SU & ATS off a home SU win with 15+ turnovers over the last couple of seasons, winning by more than 16 points and covering by more than 9 points a game on average. Making their playoff debuts, L.A.'s big men showed little signs of stage fright. Elton Brand led his team with a confident 21 points, while "Caveman" Kaman added 15 points and 13 rebounds. Veterans Sam Cassell had 19 points and Cotino Mobley 17. That balance and the home-court advantage figures to be too much for the Nuggets here. With Game 1 jitters out of the way, look for Los Angeles to finish strong to get the SU win and this time, the spread win, as well.
