Mitchell Not Ready to Play; Parker Expected to Start

The Kansas City Star reports Chiefs WR Freddie Mitchell (knee) has missed more than a week of practice, a string that continued Tuesday as the Chiefs completed a morning workout in shells. A former Eagles receiver, Mitchell was brought to Kansas City this summer to battle for the No. 2 receiver job opposite WR Eddie Kennison. But Mitchell injured his knee on July 29, left training camp for a second opinion, then opted against having arthroscopic surgery because he wanted to be back on the field faster. Asked today if Mitchell is close to practicing, Vermeil said, “I don’t think so.” “It’s a very confusing thing,” he said. “It probably shouldn’t be as complicated as it is. I think we’ve got three opinions now. All those opinions take time and time passes by.” While Mitchell sits, the receiver race is wide open, Vermeil said. Second-year WR Samie Parker is expected to lock down the No. 2 spot, and at least seven receivers are fighting for three other positions. Two darkhorses, WR John Booth and WR Jeris McIntyre, are giving the coaches more to ponder.
