His future with the Falcons was already in doubt, but now Price, a seventh-year receiver, faces an uphill battle that looks unmanageable. The blow he took from Titans safety John LeJeune occurred as Price turned to catch a 13-yard pass from Matt Schaub near the Atlanta sideline. As LeJeune nailed him in the right side, Price held onto the ball, but his helmet slammed hard against the Georgia Dome turf. He walked off the field under his own power, but Price didn't return. "I was impressed with him going and getting that ball," Mora said. "He knew there was going to be a collision, and he went and got it. He took a shot." Two days later, results of the concussion test were still unavailable. Price may have disappointed fans with his lack of production with the Falcons, but he has played hurt plenty of times and has never missed a game in his career. "He's hurting some now, but he should be fine," Mora said. "Knowing Peerless, he'll be back out there." (08/22/2005)

LaBrandon Toefield, who's starting, gained just 18 yards on seven carries. Rookie Alvin Pearman, who was impressive in the opener, gained just 21 yards on eight carries and fumbled his first attempt. They rushed for only 95 yards in 29 attempts for a 3.3 yard average -- and that was misleading because quarterback David Garrard gained 21 yards on three carries. OT Jon Stinchcomb ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee during a goal-line drill. Stinchcomb, a third-year pro who coach Jim Haslett said had made great strides in the off-season program, went down among a pile of players on a running play. A second-round draft pick in 2003, Stinchcomb underwent surgery the next day and faces six to seven months of rehab. "He just twisted it, he really didn't hit anybody," Haslett said of Stinchcomb, who worked to move up the depth chart after being active for only 10 games his first two seasons. "He was just coming off the ball, and I don't think he made contact with anybody at the time." Haslett said he's confident that Stinchcomb, who was being groomed as Gandy's eventual replacement, will bounce back next season. "I know Jon and I know what kind of guy he is," Haslett said. "He's going to work his butt off to get back and play next year, and I don't think it's going to be a problem because I know his work ethic." Stinchcomb will be sidelined for the entire season. It's worth a little light-hearted humor, because Porter actually expects to be back for the third preseason game against Arizona in the Raiders' exhibition home opener Aug. 26. Furthermore, Denver has meaning. It was where he torched Champ Bailey time and again last year, catching six passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns. In the meantime, he's out rehabilitating, doing occasionally strange-looking workouts and biding his time. "I'm anxious to play football," Porter said. "I'm not out here to rehab. It's kind of like I don't even need a trainer anymore. I just go through the routine. But it's coming." One of the routines has him jumping up and down on one leg. What the heck is that, anyway? Coach Bill Cowher said Porter likely will miss a month after he had knee surgery Aug. 10 to remove a loose piece of cartilage. The Pro Bowl linebacker was injured in practice after he celebrated a victory in a blocking drill by jumping up and stomping his feet. "That probably didn't help it," Porter said of his display, "but if it was going to happen it was going to happen anyway. It was already loose cartilage in there. CB Jerametrius Butler opted for season-ending surgery to repair a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. There had been hope that Butler would try and play with the injury and avoid having surgery, but after being examined by Dr. Riley Williams in New York, Butler decided surgery was his best option. Williams was scheduled to perform the surgery on Aug. 22. "Some players play through PCL tears, but they don't play corner," Butler said. "They play running back or offensive line, where they run forward. I backpedal and I have to plant at 100 m.p.h. With a torn PCL, I can't do that. "I can run forward fine. I can beat half of you all running right now. I can't do my job correctly without my PCL, so I have to have surgery. I don't want to do it, but I have to. I have to look to the future." The injury occurred July 28, the first day of training camp, but Butler continued to try and practice. On the third day of camp, he stopped practicing, and didn't work again before making the decision on Aug. 16. "It was just something that just happened, I really can't explain it," Butler said of the injury. "I broke on the ball, made a play and then I felt my knee kind of give out. I kept playing on it, but it didn't feel like it normally felt. "I was actually hurting myself more (by trying to practice). I was getting a bone bruise on my knee because my bone was running into my knee." (08/22/2005)
