Default Summerly garners Kentucky Oaks

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Summerly, ridden by Jerry Bailey, led from gate to wire in winning Friday's $500,000 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. The time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:50.23.

Summerly turned the tables on heavily favored Sis City in the Kentucky Oaks. In the previous race for both fillies, the Ashland Stakes, Sis City easily defeated a field of five horses, while Summerly finished fourth more than 19 lengths behind the winner.

This time, though, Summerly took the lead right from the start with Sis City pressing the pace. The two horses ran one-two up the backstretch and into the final turn. Heading home, Summerly and Sis City were dead even, but at the top of the stretch, Summerly slowly began to inch ahead while Sis City began to fade, before eventually finishing fourth.

Summerly hit the wire two lengths in front of second place finisher In The Gold, which rallied late for place money. Gallant Secret came surging down the stretch for third with Sis City, the overwhelming 3-5 favorite, finishing a disappointing fourth.

Completing the order of finish was Memorette, Runway Model and Rugula.

Bailey, who has hinted that he may retire after this year, could have made his last ride in this race.

Summerly, who is owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, captured her fifth race in eight career starts and picked up $300,000. The filly, who is trained by Steven Asmussen, who led the country in wins last year, has now earned $700,000.

Summerly returned $11.20, $5.00 and $4.00. In The Gold paid $6.20 and $5.00, and Gallant Secret paid $9.20 for show.

The weather forecast for Saturday's running of the 131st Kentucky Derby calls for mostly sunny skies with a post-time temperature between 75-80 degrees.
