| Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell will undergo shoulder surgery in early June and is expected to miss three months of action following the procedure. Bagwell has been on the 15-day disabled list since on May 10 with a right shoulder sprain, marking the first time that he had been on the DL since the 1998 season. Now there is speculation that the injury could be career threatening for the 36-year-old, who has been suffering from a degenerative arthritic condition in his shoulder for several years. Bagwell, whose 449 career home runs ranks 28th in major-league history, is hitting .250 with just three homers and 15 RBI in 24 games this season. In 14 major-league seasons, all with the Astros, Bagwell owns a .297 lifetime average along with 2,311 hits, 1,525 RBI and 202 stolen bases. He is Houston's all-time leader in home runs, total bases, RBI, walks and extra-base hits. 05/15 21:13:21 ET powered by www.sportsnetwork.com. |
