| New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees first baseman Tino Martinez was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday. Martinez batted .391 with six homers, 15 runs batted in and 10 runs scored over six games for the resurgent Yankees last week -- all wins. At 37 years old, Martinez became the fourth oldest player in major league history to homer in five straight games and the first to do it for the Yankees since Don Mattingly homered in eight straight during the 1987 season. During New York's current eight-game winning streak, Martinez has homered eight times. This is his fifth career Player of the Week award and the 83rd time a Yankee has been honored since the award's inception in 1974. The other candidates considered also play for AL East teams: Boston Red Sox rightfielder Trot Nixon, and starting pitchers Roy Halladay of the Toronto Blue Jays and Daniel Cabrera of the Baltimore Orioles. 05/16 16:58:52 ET powered by www.sportsnetwork.com. |
