| Denver, CO (Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants superstar outfielder Barry Bonds has been taken off IV antibiotics and is now taking oral medication to fight off a bacterial infection in his surgically repaired right knee, which has been operated on three times since late January. Reports started to surface on Wednesday evening that Bonds had been hooked to an antibiotics IV 24 hours a day to deal with a "potentially serious" infection and was "immobilized for the foreseeable future." However, San Francisco general manager Brian Sabean quickly refuted the report. Bonds, who currently is on the 15-day disabled list, had an arthroscopic procedure on March 17 for a debridement of tears in the medial and lateral menisci of his right knee. It was the second operation on the knee in less than two months, as he also had a minor arthritis cleanup and small meniscus tear repaired on January 31. He's had the knee drained three times since the March 17 operation. Surgery was also performed on Bonds' left knee last October, and he has recently been under a constant microscope from the media because of the BALCO controversy and baseball's steroids frenzy. There is no timetable for Bonds' return. The 40-year-old Bonds currently has 703 career home runs and is just 11 shy of matching Babe Ruth for second place on baseball's all-time list. He captured his seventh National League MVP award last season, hitting .362 with 45 homers and 101 runs batted in despite just 373 official at-bats. He broke his own major league record by walking 232 times. 05/19 11:44:16 ET powered by www.sportsnetwork.com. |
