De La Hoya weighs mega-finale vs. Mayweather

Oscar De La Hoya celebrates his win over Ricardo Mayorga Saturday night. Next up may be a farewell bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

LAS VEGAS — Oscar De La Hoya's plan for an encore is still anyone's guess after his sixth-round technical knockout of Ricardo Mayorga to capture the WBC super welterweight title.
There's even the possibility the Golden Boy has fought his last fight.
"We will have to wait and see," said De La Hoya (38-4, 30 knockouts). "A lot of emotions are running through my head. I will let a few days go by and think about it. I will sit down with my family, my wife and by myself alone to figure out what I'm going to do. I will have to see if it's worth fighting again."
De La Hoya, 33, now has the chance to hang up his gloves for good as a nine-time world champion in six weight classes. He was accurate and powerful in his first fight in 20 months, and is no longer burdened by his ninth-round knockout loss to then-undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins in September 2004, which had been his last fight before Saturday night at the MGM Grand.
In dethroning Mayorga with a TKO at 1:25 of the sixth round, De La Hoya showed no rust but plenty of power. He scored three knockdowns in the fight, establishing his authority in the first round with a perfectly timed left hook, and finishing off the Nicaraguan with a two-fisted barrage of shots.
"Oscar looked great," acknowledged unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., a hopeful opponent for an eight-figure payday should De La Hoya decide to fight Sept. 16, previously marked for his mega-fight farewell.
"It's about two living legends meeting," said Mayweather, 29. "That fight is history. It's about legacy, and Oscar has never been scared of legacy. To leave out on top beating Floyd Mayweather would be brilliant for him and having Oscar's name on my roster would be unbelievable also. The Golden Boy vs. Pretty Boy is a tremendous matchup."
Says HBO pay-per-view chief Mark Taffet: "That fight is so big, the split could be 70-70."
As head of Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya, the promoter, knows a fight against Mayweather would be a box office smash. But as a fighter who came back for the chance to go out on top, it's also a risky proposition, complicated by the fact that De La Hoya is trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr.
" I always want to fight the best talent, but there's nothing on the table," De La Hoya said. "(Floyd Jr.) is the best pound-for-pound fighter out there, but out of respect, I'd have to sit down and discuss it with Floyd Sr. because he's my trainer and he's his father," De La Hoya said. "That fight is not a guarantee."
Mayweather Sr. trained his son until they split professionally seven years ago and Mayweather Jr.'s uncle Roger Mayweather became his trainer. Despite his son's desire to fight De La Hoya, Mayweather Sr. said that's one fight he won't be a part of, and doubts it will happen.
"I don't give a damn what he wants. I'm the daddy and, in this particular situation, I'm calling the shots," he said. "Everybody wants to see this fight, but nobody's got to lay down with this burden.
"What kind of daddy would I be to train somebody to knock out my son? At the end of the day, I trained both of them. Either way, it's what I gave them to win with or lose with. It's a no-win situation."
HBO will air the replay of De La Hoya's victory against Mayorga on Saturday at 9:45 p.m. ET/6:45 PT prior to the live showing of WBA welterweight champion Luis Collazo's title defense against Britain's unbeaten Ricky Hatton.
