Canas hit with two year ban for doping

LONDON, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Argentine world number 10 Guillermo Canas has been banned for two years for doping, men's tennis organisers the ATP said on Monday.

The baseliner was hit with the suspension from competition after he tested positive for the prohibited diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) at the ATP tournament in Acapulco, Mexico in February.

Canas must repay $276,070 in prize money and forfeit 525 singles and 95 doubles ranking points as part of the sanction. He will be eligible to return to competition on June 11, 2007.

thats horrible...youd expect the guy to be top 5 and in finals ofd majors consistently if he was using, lol...his career is done..can you say world team tennis anyone? senior tour? lol

Indeed it is a shame. Canas is a nice guy and well liked by his peers. I dont agree with Dave in that he's not really past his prime. Some players blossom late and play there best tennis in their late 20's. 2004 was his best yr winning 3 times on the ATP tour, and he was having a very solid '05 (semi's at Indina Wells, and Halle, plus a 5 set loss to Puerta in the qtrs at Roland Garros).

But too bad--HE CHEATED and tha ATP tour (unlike nonsesne MLB, who gave cheater Palmeiro 10 games--10 games??, waht a joke) has very penal guidelines for this and RIGHTFULLY SO.

Yeah thats a criming shame that Palmeiro onlu got 10 games lol. When I saw that, my jaw dropped. Not only did he use, but he lied about it. I guess him lying about it dropped the sentence from 10 years to 10 days

This will put a dent in his career.

yeah tommy, LMAO, its ridiculous. Ppl were all over Canseco, but at least he admitted it. I loved Joe Morgan's comments last night when asked about whether Raffy should make the HOF. He wouldnt say yes/no, all he said was if raffy gets in then there is no way pete rose shouldnt! charlie hustle belongs in the hall, no questions asked

Canas is battling the ruling now... he's saying that it was a Cough remedy that had failed him.

I hope this is the case, he's a solid tennis player. I've won a few times on him in the past.
