Default Mathieu 7-5, 6-3 over Roddick

1st round exit for Andy... what an amazing performance by Mathieu, jeezis.

He hit a lob from Roddick, ran back the court (from the net) to get it and blindly lashed it cross court for a winner in a rally which Roddick hit a great volley to get Mathieu to the net then hit it over his head. Watch ESPN tonight for it, it's one of the shots of the year.

Stunning... Lleyton earlier today, now Andy #2 and #3 seeds. Expect the odds to be a lot closer this week now.

Andy looked lethargic. Tired.

he seems ready for Flushing Meadows, don't ya think?

Lleyton? God knows where his mind is. Apparently he is 'sick'? really, sick from that recent wedding of yours Hewitt? Why enter a Tennis Masters Series event to quit in the first round?

....Federer's competitors for the US Open are lookign REAL good.......

yeah roddick simply isnt improving like he needs to....he has the serve and if thats not working he is in trouble...his return game is awful, his backhand still sucks...his conditioning seems better but i just dont see him improving....i think a coaching change is in order, never should have left gilbert...

speaking of the us open, its wide open this yr, who knows who will win it...all the top players are looking vulnerable or havent been playing...federer hasnt played much lately, neither has safin, roddick looked like shit today, hewitt was sick....can AA do it? maybe? if his body holds up, he has looked pretty solid this week and last....can nadal do it? i dunno, his effort vs moya was gritty but i don't see him being able to win like that in the open....

nice read naught

you KNOW Federer will be ready. I'm worried that his competittors will not. SOMEONE give him a battle!!!!! He has unfortunately trashed Andre all yr, so i dont know whether Agassi can do it, especially in a 5 setter. BUt it's Flushign Meadows, he battled him hard last yr and lost in 5, who knows

yeah part of me believes the only thing keeping AA going is his desire to win another major, and his desire to beat Federer when all odds are against him. Last yr he had a great chance to do so, that stoppage in play really hurt AA and he struggled out of the gate, but still almost pulled it out.

As far as A-rod goes, he definately needs to do something. I actually think he would be a better player if he would stop serving so big. His big serve makes him lazy, he doesn't work on the rest of his game. Maybe start spinning in the serve more, varying it up a big so he will have no choice but to practice on everything else since he won't win so many cheap points off his serve. The backhand and his net play need some major work...that slice bh is just awful

yep; average backhard, average return game.

how 5d keeps giving him -5 to -5.5 games is beyond me to a player who simply doesnt return serve well.

GOING BACK TO THE START OF THE SECOND HALF of the hardcourt season, VS the line -5 games he is (WHICH HE USUALLY HAS);
(todays line was -5.5 incidentally)

1 cover-5 loses-3 pushes

nice dont ya think?

yeah its ridiculous....even when he wins he tends to win sets 7-6, 7-5 or 6-4...usually 1 break of serve at most in a set

Mathieu broke Andy twice in the first set today alone

3/3 total for 100%
14 aces to 3 I believe?

You're right about Agassi maybe, if he's feeling up to it come next month I think he maybe one of the only few who can give Roger a real run. Andre still protects his serve very well and has a return game maybe still among the best in the world. Then again Roger is a monster plain and simple.

Gilbert was working for ESPN and was directly behind Andy's chair in the game today, maybe 5 feet. Kind of funny and odd at the same time
He should've never gotten rid of Brad.

Some good tennis today, I enjoyed it.
