Jack’s Free Pick Monday: Furman -4

The Furman Paladins returned four starters from a team that went 25-8 last season.  All four averaged 8.8 points per game or more, including Jordan Lyons, who averaged 16.2 points per game.  They are among the favorites to win the Southern Conference as a result.

Furman is off to a 7-1 start this season with five wins by double-digits.  Their only loss came in a true road game at Alabama as 3.5-point underdogs.  Each of the four returning starters are all averaging at least 9.5 points per game, plus Mike Bothwell is a returning reserve who has stepped his game up this season in averaging 10.4 points per game on 50.8% shooting.

South Florida has been extremely disappointing this season.  They are off to a 3-4 start with their only three wins coming against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Wofford and Loyola-Chicago.  They lost by 14 at home to Boston College as 6.5-point favorites, by 17 at home to IUPUI as 16.5-point favorites, by 20 to New Mexico State on a neutral s 3-point dogs and by 7 to Nebraska on a neutral as 2.5-point favorites.  They failed to cover the spread in those four games by a combined 80.5 points.

Furman is 10-1 ATS as a road favorite or PK over the last two seasons.  South Florida is 4-14 ATS in home games off a loss over the last three years.  The Bulls are 1-9 ATS vs. top teams that outscore their opponents by 12-plus points per game over the last three seasons.  The Paladins are 37-15 ATS in their last 52 games vs. a team with a losing record.  Bet Furman Monday.
