We really like home team in this matchup. The Panthers (2-2-2) have been banking points their play hasn’t earned. Through six games they were scoring just 2.0 goals per game, with the league’s worst power play, and they’d been outscored 12-17, yet they’d collected points in four of six.

The Blue Jackets (2-2-0) are coming off a 5-3 loss in St. Louis in which they blew a 2-0 first-period lead, but the night before, they showed what they can do, outshooting the Penguins 45-22 in a 3-2 shootout win. They have the depth to push the pace, with Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson, Matthew Knies, Valeri Nichushkin and Zach Werenski. Johnson is rolling, with a goal against St. Louis and the shootout winner against Pittsburgh.

This is a classic sell-high spot on a Panthers team whose record has outrun their underlying play, missing their two most important forwards and playing on tired legs.

I really like the way this spot sets up for the Sharks as they look to rebound following Saturday's 3-1 loss on home ice against the Oilers. That was Macklin Celebrini's first game back after missing a pair of games due to injury and turned out to be a sluggish matinee affair. I expect to see a lot more energy from San Jose on Tuesday as it hosts a Bruins team that is coming off back-to-back blowout wins over the Mammoth and Flyers, scoring a whopping 11 goals in the process. Boston is 4-2 overall but just 1-1 on the road with its lone victory coming by way of overtime. The Sharks have taken three straight meetings in this series and I look for them to make it four on Tuesday. Take San Jose.

Blues v Senators NHL Free Pick

The Angle(s): The Ottawa Senators are on the second night of a back-to-back, and I think the market is giving the tired-legs angle too much weight. Ottawa just went into New Jersey and handled the Devils 4-1, and coming back to the Canadian Tire Centre should more than make up for the short turnaround.

The St. Louis Blues have dropped three straight, most recently a 3-2 overtime loss to San Jose, and even that record is flattering. St. Louis has scored above its expected baseline, which tells me the offense has been running on finishing luck that won’t last. When the shooting regresses, a team that’s already allowing 3+ goals per game doesn’t have much to fall back on. I’ll back the better, more structured club at home, even on no rest.
