Jack's Free Pick Tuesday: Dodgers/Braves UNDER 6.5

The Braves have just 10 hits while the Dodgers have just 14 hits in 18 innings in this series.  Both struggling offenses now face the best starter each team has to offer in my opinion in Sale and Yamamoto tonight.  Runs will be at a premium, and this total is set as low as 6.5 for good reason.

I certainly question the Dodgers saving Yamamoto for Game 3 instead of starting him in Game 2.  But they know what they have in him, which is one of the best starters in postseason history.  He earned the decision in three of Los Angeles' four wins in the World Series last year, which included getting the final eight outs of Game 7 on no rest.  He posted a 1.02 ERA over 17 2/3 innings in that World Series.

Yamamoto is 14-9 with a 2.53 ERA and 0.87 WHIP In 28 starts this season.  He is 8-3 with a 1.77 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in 12 road starts.  Yamamoto owns the Braves, going 1-1 with a 0.55 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in three career starts against them, allowing one earned run in 16 1/3 innings.  

I also questioned the Braves using Chris Sale in the 9th inning with a 4-run lead to close out the Phillies last series.  That pushed him back to Game 3 of this series, thus giving him just one start against the Dodgers when he could have gone in Game 2 and Game 5.  It worked in their favor with the Braves stealing Game 2 without him.

Sale is 14-9 with a 2.22 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 28 starts this season.  He is 8-3 with a 1.81 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 15 home starts as well.  Sale is 1-1 with a 1.13 ERA and 0.62 WHIP in two starts against the Dodgers this season, allowing just 2 earned runs in 16 innings with 18 K's.  Bet the UNDER in Game 3 Tuesday.

Pivetta's recent report card makes the Under attractive. Since returning from the injured list, he has a 1.64 ERA in five starts. In September specifically, he allowed only three earned runs over 18.2 innings, then surrendered one run in 3.1 innings against Chicago in the Wild Card round.

May's overall recent numbers are poor, but his performance against this particular opponent has been dramatically better: a 1.23 ERA in three starts against San Diego this season.

The first two games of the series have produced five and seven runs, meaning neither has exceeded tonight's total. San Diego has scored only five runs in the series, while Milwaukee has scored seven.

Petco Park also gives the pitchers a more forgiving environment, and neither team should have any incentive to conserve its best relievers. San Diego faces elimination and Milwaukee can close out the series tonight.

The reason this stays a free play rather than joining the premium card is important: we have excellent organic support for the Under, but not the powerful high-unit total-system confirmation required to elevate it.

Locking this in early. Nick Pivetta is the anchor here. He posted a 1.45 ERA over four September starts and has allowed just one run since the postseason began. Dustin May is the obvious danger, but Milwaukee has kept him on a short leash and isn't going to let him turn this elimination game into batting practice. The Brewers finished 2nd in MLB with a 3.52 ERA, giving them pitching depth behind May. More importantly, these teams have already played two one-run grinders, finishing 3-2 and 4-3. Games 1 and 2 of this series could have gone either way but the Padres return home down 0-2 and facing a must-win situation in Game 3 on Tuesday. San Diego starter Nick Pivetta missed most of the season due to injury but since returning, has been terrific, logging a 2.21 FIP and 1.01 WHIP in 34 2/3 innings of work. Remember, he went 13-5 with a 3.49 FIP and 0.99 WHIP and finished sixth in N.L. Cy Young Award voting in his first year with the Padres in 2025. Dustin May hasn't had nearly as strong of a run since joining the Brewers. He had a solid start to the campaign with the Cardinals but since joining Milwaukee has posted a 5.06 FIP and 1.42 WHIP in 36 2/3 innings pitched. As a pitcher that can struggle with his command, it's not surprising that he's had a more difficult time on the road this season, going 2-4 with a 5.88 ERA and 1.48 WHIP compared to a 3.94 ERA and 1.21 WHIP at home. Take San Diego.

Nick Pivetta is a veteran I trust to get the job done here. Pivetta a 1.64 ERA over his last 5 starts granted they weren’t very deep but I think he goes 6 here on Tuesday then off to that bullpen.
